Dillenburg

Looking for a piece of Dutch 'orange-coloured' history? Then visit the city of Dillenburg, where our own William of Orange saw the light of day in 1533. However, almost nothing remains of the original castle, where his royal cradle stood. You can, however, visit the 40-metre-high Wilhelmsturm [Williams’ Tower] in Dillenburg, a monument that stands exactly where the royal palace used to be. This tower also houses a museum, which reveals how militant our ancestor was. A family tree of the Houses Nassau and Oranje-Nassau can also be seen here.

Outings in Dillenburg:

  • Wilhelmsturm [Williams’ Tower]; museum and fortified gun emplacements
  • Starting point 4th stage of the Oranjeroute cycling tour
  • Villa Grün museum
  • Donsbach wildlife park
  • Carriage museum in the former Orangery

Marburg

Visit the fairy-tale charm of Marburg. The city of the centuries-old half-timbered houses, but also the thousands of stairs and the beautiful alleys. The old upper town in particular, with its restored half-timbered houses from the period from the 14th to the 17th century and historic churches, still clearly points to the time of the Middle Ages.

The Brothers Grimm
Follow in the footsteps of the Brothers Grimm here in this idyllic place on the German Fairy-tale Route. The lower part of the city can be reached via various steep streets and stairs. Looking for romance at its best? Then take a boat trip on the river Lahn.

Outings in Marburg:
  • Castle of Marburg
  • Elisabeth church
  • Old botanical gardens
  • Oldest house called "Steinhaus" dating from 1318
  • Rivercruise on the river Lahn

Wisent [European bison]

The wisent plays an important role in nearby Bad Berleburg. The wisent, also known as the European bison, is the largest land mammal in Europe. In the 20 hectare large Wisent Wildnis am Rothaarsteig it is possible for you to admire this "unique bison". Its uniqueness lies in part in that it has a smaller and higher head than the North American bison and in that the wisent is an aurochs (now extinct ancestor of domestic cattle) hybrid. In 2011 some bison were released in this rocky and wooded area and since then the population has increased considerably. You will find three kilometres of natural hiking trails here.

For groups it is possible to go out with a bison ranger. The Wisent Wildnis is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday

Walking around Hotel AM Fang

The walking possibilities around the hotel are endless and superb! First of all, the well-known Rothaarsteig, also known as the "path of the senses", offers numerous possibilities. The 7th stage of this long-distance path leads past Bad Laasphe and is easily accessible from the half-timbered town via an access road. Furthermore, there is a special sculpture walking path to follow in the immediate vicinity, which takes you past various works of art in about two hours.

A stage of the long-distance path Lahnwanderweg also leads through Bad Laasphe. Walking along the banks of the river Lahn you will discover unspoiled nature and idyllic villages. Finally, the Mythen- und Sagenpfad [myths and legends path] is worth mentioning as a beautiful hiking option. This trail starts in Bad Laasphe and takes you - via the picturesque old town - through the beautiful Wittgenstein region. Along the way, you have a view of Wittgenstein Castle and climb the slope of the Laasphedal.

Ski areas

Even though you are not in the Alps, at winter temperatures there is still a 100% snow guarantee in the Sauerland in January and February. There are several snow cannons active in the ski areas at temperatures around freezing point!

Ski area Hesselbacher Gletscher [Glacier]
The Bad Laasphe-Hesselbach ski area is about ten minutes by car from Hotel AM Fang. This area reaches up to a height of 550 metres and is accessible from December to the end of March. You will find 4 slopes, two red and two blue, which can be reached with a ski lift. But this is also the superior place for cross-country skiing and sledding.

Ski areas Biedenkopf-Sackpfeife and Neuastenberg
Other ski areas near AM Fang include Biedenkopf-Sackpfeife and Neuastenberg. The beautiful slopes of Winterberg and Willingen can also be reached within an hour.

Willingen

After Winterberg, Willingen is the second winter sports resort in the Sauerland. It is part of the principal unified ski area Wintersport-Arena Sauerland. With one pass you are welcome on all slopes of this ski area!

Ski slope [piste]
Although Winterberg might be more lively, Willingen has 16 kilometres of ski slopes and a genuine gondola that takes you to the highest point of the Ettelsberg. Here, at an altitude of 830 metres, one of the longest runs in the Sauerland begins, namely a two-kilometre-long slope!

Ski school
Moreover, it is a bit quieter here and therefore more suitable for beginners and children. Let the little ones practice at the children's ski school with a moving belt. The ski area is a true paradise for cross-country skiers!

Winterberg

In this largest ski area in the Sauerland, you will imagine yourself in a completely different world after a few kilometres. Here you will see peaks of 800 metres, fairy-tale white trees and wide slopes. The area is especially suitable for families and novice skiers. There are about 19 lifts, 20 kilometres of slopes and a real ski jump. You can already ski in Winterberg at temperatures around freezing point.

Winterberger Kappe
The Winterberger Kappe is all about action and unique experiences. Go down in a bobsleigh and reach 130 km per hour with ease! On the Kappe you will also find the Panorama Erlebnis Brücke with suspension bridge, beautiful viewpoints and many more adventurous elements!

Other places of interest
No weather for skiing? Then you can always hear the stories about winter sports in the Wintersportmuseum Winterberg-Neuastenberg.

Ilsequelle

At 12 kilometres from Bad Laasphe, well hidden in a green forest clearance of the beautiful Rothaar Mountains, lies the Ilsequelle, a natural spring with healing water. In the Middle Ages, the sick went to this well, who are said to have been made better by drinking the water. In no time, the "quelle" grew into a true health resort. Even the biggest sceptics became curious.

Purifying spring water
What are you waiting for? Go to that well, fill your bottle with the holy water and quench your thirst. There are even glasses ready for you at the well! The water is certainly pure, so if it does not help it will not harm. Would the beautiful surroundings also have a healing effect? You will almost believe it when you sit on a bench at the Ilsequelle with a glass of the purest water and enjoy the phenomenal view!

Walking route
For experienced walkers, the trip from Bad Laasphe to the Ilsequelle is easy. Would you rather take a short walk? Park your car at Heiligenborn and walk a short route to the source. Your kids will love the adventure trail or the fairy-tale walk.
